En En is 12 years old this year. She used to be able to walk and feed herself. But at age 6, a genetic mutation began to affect her. At 7, she was in a wheelchair. At 8, she could no longer walk. At 9, she became bedridden for the long term.

Now, she has to take more than 30 pills a day and drink formula every four hours, with nutrition maintained through a feeding tube in her stomach. There is a battery device implanted in her brain, only to reduce her seizures and help her sleep peacefully for a while. Doctors say she may only live until 18.

Her mother, Qiqi, is 44 years old this year and has not worked for the past six years. She cares for En En around the clock and does not dare to leave for long. This family survives only on the father’s income from driving Grab every day. The earnings are unstable, yet they still have to bear the costs of formula milk, diapers, medication, and more.

They need six tins of formula a month, and medication costs exceed RM300. On top of daily living expenses, the burden has become truly unbearable for them.

When we asked Qiqi if she was tired, she only replied softly: “There is no other way.”

It was not a complaint, but the voice of a mother doing everything she can to keep going.
